Michelle's Story
As told by her mother, Tammy
As
early as kindergarten, I used to kid that it would take chains and padlocks to
get my daughter Michelle to sit. When her first grade teacher advised that we
take her to a doctor to check if she had an attention disorder, I agreed that
it was necessary. For the next five years, Michelle was on medication to treat
her ADHD. But, every moment I could— including weekends and summers— I would
take her off her medication. I always felt that it was changing who she was.
She wasn't the same fun-loving kid— almost zombie-like. And this was the kid
that never stopped.
I was getting to the end of my rope with the side effects of medication when I
heard about DORE on the radio. I realized that it was the best shot I could
give Michelle— even if it meant working overtime to pay for the program.
As soon as Michelle started the program in April 2004, I immediately noticed a
huge difference in her anger-management issues. Through the sixth grade, the Cs
and Ds changed to As and Bs. She recently completed the DORE treatment in
December 2005, and she hasn't used her medication since she began DORE. She got
straight As last quarter. I always knew that Michelle was smart; she just
couldn't focus. Now, she's the happy-go-lucky kid she should be— thanks to
DORE.
